Miliou Village - Cyprus

The village of Milou is about 15 km from Polis. Driving from Polis you turn right at the road signs and take the very steep winding road to Milou which is at the top, high up in a beautiful setting where the air is cool and fresh. Milou is the only village in the Polis area where the muktar is a lady. Milou is spread over a wide area of countryside. The deep valley running arround the village and the river are protected areas.
The river is one of the few places in Cyprus where you'll find fresh water crabs. In spring time the entire area is covered in wild flowers of may different kind and the nightingales can be heard singing most nights arround the river. The population of the village at present stands at 70 this includes 20 school age children who make their daily journey to schools in Yiolou and Polemi. The Milou village school is closed. The other 50 villagers, mostly middle aged, spend their time farming, citrus fruits, olives and grapes.
The village people gather arround the renovated square most night to talk while enjoying a Cyprus coffee, zivania or a beer and homemade snacks. The road leading to and running through the square was renovated as well to give it the original cobbled look. The biggest claim to fame for Milou is the Sulphur Springs next to the monastry of Agyii Anargiri, build in the 16th century it became famous for its healing properties. People came from all over to bath and wash in the Sulphur Springs. High above the village is the natural spring of Vassa, still with natural running water.
